Story Time - I think I mentioned this in a real old blog, but it's worth bringing up again. This is the story of the best card I ever pulled in a personal pack.
My family and I take a yearly trip to Cooperstown NY. Obviously one of my favorite parts of the trip is hunting for cards. Well back in 2017 as I was looking to spend my last $20 I had on me, I picked up a pack of 2017 Topps Jumbo and a pack of 2017 Archives Hobby. The lady working asked me if I wanted to pick the packs. I told her that I wanted her to pick, as my luck is usually poor when I do it. I grabbed the packs and hit the road to our next stop. I didn't expect to get much from two packs, so I ripped the packs in the front seat.
Much like 2022, Topps flagship was featuring the 1987 design for their insert anniversary set (30th and 35th Anniversary. We'll expect it again in 2027). In the Topps Jumbo pack, I got a Yankee auto from that 1987 set. All I can envision is Trey Amburgey, but that's not it :-)
Then came the Archives pack. Then I'd have my Cooperstown Aaron Judge Rookie Auto Story. Like I just got taken down by Stone Cold Steve Austin, I was stunned. At the time, he was red-hot, but did not have a ton of cards, let alone autos. This one is numbered /150. I've considered selling it many times but felt like I'd be selling the story with it, and I wasn't ready to do that.
Topps TBT cards are sweet! Throwback and retro designs are some of my favorite things about current collecting. I just don't do a great job of keeping up with the TBT sets. These are some nice ones I've added to my PC over the years. I think all are pretty obvious as to why.
Do you have a section in your PC of random Rookie Cards? Me too, could be any variety of reasons why something might end up this section, but usually it's a cool story or memory unlocked when I saw the card.
- Never had a tie to Cutch, but he's just a guy I felt like should be saved in Chrome.
- Joe Jackson is a distant relative of Shoeless Joe. Easy addition.
- The other two are more about card design. Love a good Retro Redesign!

Beam Teams. There's so many different years to look for, with parallels and autos. This set dates back to the early 90's. You can get lost in checking all the ways to collect the Beam Team Inserts. If you're into 90's basketball, you'll really enjoy this rabbit-hole.
